Departure Lounge

BY Dougal Irvine

Delayed at Malaga Airport after a week in the sun celebrating their graduation from school, four less-than-innocent 18 year olds caught between adolescence and adulthood reminisce about their time together.

It soon becomes clear that their individual memories of the holiday are at odds, particularly when it comes to romance and the girl on all their minds…. Is she as innocent as we’re lead to believe, and will the boys’ friendships hold firm as they all face a coming of age?

Departure Lounge was first produced as part of the inaugural Perfect Pitch showcase in 2006, one of twelve shows presented over two weeks at Upstairs at the Gatehouse.

A workshop production at the Arts Theatre followed with a cast that included Haydn Oakley, Russell Walker and Adam Kelly.

In 2008 Andy produced a new production at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Stuart Matthew Price, Luke Kempner, Tim Webb, Mike Shearer and Hayley Angel Wardle.

The show was then presented as part of the Summer Play Festival at the Public Theater in New York but the London premiere had to wait until 2010 where it had a limited season at the Waterloo East Theatre (off-West End) starring Chris Fountain, Verity Rushworth, Jack Shalloo, Steven Webb and Liam Tamne.

The production received a Whatsonstage.com Award nomination for Best New Musical.
